Domestic Abuse and Children Team Paralegal

We are looking for a paralegal to join our domestic abuse and children team

About the role:

As a paralegal in our domestic abuse and children team, you will provide comprehensive and efficient support to our solicitors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Performing administrative case management tasks, including opening and closing of files, diarising deadlines and hearings, time recording, billing; preparing files for costing; organising meetings and maintaining solicitors’ diaries;
  • Assisting solicitors in the preparation of cases, including taking instructions and drafting documents, as required;
  • Conducting legal research and gathering evidence for cases;
  • Liaising with LAA, clients, counsel, clerks and experts;
  • Assisting with hearing preparation, including bundles and attending court and court clerking;
  • Managing cases on HMCTS Court Portal, including submitting applications, uploading/ downloading documents, and reviewing updates on cases;
  • Preparing and reviewing evidence and disclosure;
  • Attending meetings and taking notes;
  • Assisting with preparation of applications; applying for changes to certificate scope or limitations and using CCMS portal;
  • Speaking to prospective new clients, completing new enquiry forms;

What we are looking for:

  • Education: Degree.
  • A passion for family law.
  • Skills:
    • Strong knowledge of family law procedures.
    • Hard working and dedicated.
    • Demonstrate a keen, positive attitude and willingness to learn.
    • Excellent communication and organisational skills and ability to prioritise.
    • Be able to effectively manage own workload and to do list and work independently as well as being part of a team.
    • Be adaptable and flexible with a willingness to take on additional tasks and assist others, where necessary.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office, P4W, CCMS and e-filing systems.
    • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.

Senior Costs Draftsperson/Cost Lawyer

We are looking for a skilled Costs Draftsperson/Costs Lawyer to join our finance team

We are looking for someone who is committed and hardworking, who enjoys operating in a pressurised and highly motivated team environment, with the ability to work well under pressure whilst still exceeding targets.

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to:

Drafting:

  • Various legal aid claims/bills including high cost case plans;
  • Inter partes bill of costs;
  • schedule of costs;

Preparation of:

  • Points of reply;
  • Cost budgets;
  • Negotiating settlement of costs;

In addition, you will provide support and advice to fee earners and to the billing team where required, and to provide training and ensure compliance with file management.

What we are looking for:

  • Working as a Costs Draftsperson or Costs Lawyer with a minimum of 3 years’ experience, either in-house or for a specialist cost drafting company in both privately funded and legally aided work.
  • An in depth and thorough knowledge of, and experience with handling all levels of legal aid funding from legal helps to full certificates.
  • Experience of fixed fee schemes, the application of enhancements and rates under the legal aid scheme.
  • Must be experienced in preparing high cost case plans and in negotiating with the LAA.
  • Experience of the operation of statutory charge.
  • Computer literate including knowledge of using costs drafting software e.g. Costs master.
  • Experience of handling your own costs caseload from start to finish; experience of contested costs assessments would be welcome.
  • Excellent communication and IT Skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Up to date knowledge of LAA Costs assessment guidance, CPR and legislation along with relevant case law.
  • The ability to work on your own with the minimum of supervision.
