Domestic Abuse Awareness Month 2026
In this first article as a part of domestic abuse awareness month, Serena Djiakouris, a solicitor from our domestic abuse team, explores how you can assist someone who is struggling with domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse can often be difficult to identify and is very rarely limited to one isolated incident. When you have suspicions that a friend or family member is experiencing domestic abuse, there is sometimes the added challenge that the victim may experience difficulty coming to terms with and recognising the abuse for what it is.
There are several ways that someone can support a victim experiencing domestic abuse. However, it is not always simple and therefore we have created the below guidance to assist.
Tip 1 – Listen and do not judge
A family member or friend may either disclose that they are a victim of domestic abuse, or describe certain behaviours that may raise alarm bells to you.
When provided with this information, try to create a safe and comfortable environment in which the victim feels able to speak about the matter in further detail.
It is not uncommon for a domestic abuse victim to experience difficulty in recognising that certain behaviour could amount to domestic abuse. As a common myth, many victims are not aware that abuse is not limited to physical abuse.
Tip 2 – Consider that they may not be able to leave
It is important not to criticise the victim or judge any decisions that they have made, such as not leaving the relationship. It is normal for victims to feel uncertain about the next steps and it may not be safe for them to leave immediately. There may also be other considerations, including financial dependence, children and low self-esteem. It is therefore important that you allow the victim time and space to consider their next steps, such as seeking professional help, in order to safely leave the relationship.
Tip 3 – Refer them to a legal representative
Depending upon the circumstances, it may be appropriate to refer your friend or family member to a solicitor or a domestic abuse advisor. At Goodman Ray, we have a specialist team that assists individuals in relation to domestic abuse. Sometimes victims do not have the confidence to ask for help, with the fear that they may not be believed. They may also not know who to speak to or that legal representation is an option when experiencing domestic abuse. However, it may be that one conversation a victim has with their representative that changes the course of their future and gives them the confidence and support to leave a domestically abusive relationship.
Tip 4 – Take Specific Measures
There are several measures that may be available to a victim of domestic abuse. Within our specialist team, I frequently advise victims of domestic abuse on the options available to them, such as applying for a Non-Molestation Order and/or an Occupation Order.
Tip 5 – Offer them a place to stay
A victim of domestic abuse may wish to remove themselves from the situation and environment that they are in. They may need a place to stay for safety and to escape a dangerous or uncomfortable situation.
Tip 6 – Check in on them
If the victim does not wish to leave their relationship (either immediately or at all), it may be appropriate to continue checking in on them. However, it is usually appropriate to agree to a safe word with the victim to avoid the abuser becoming aware of the situation. It is advisable that you speak with the victim and attempt to find an area where they are safe and they are able to speak freely.
Should you, a friend or family member be suffering domestic abuse, please get in contact with the domestic abuse team at Goodman Ray who will be able to assist you.
