International Adoption

Intercountry adoption is a highly specialist area of law. An intercountry adoption is one in which the prospective adopters are habitually resident in a different country to the child they are seeking to adopt.   This may be the adoption of an unknown child who is resident abroad or as happens more and more frequently as families travel abroad to live and work; it may be the adoption of a relative who lived abroad.

We can offer advice and support to families:

  • Who are considering adopting a child abroad to be brought back to England and Wales to live with them
  • Who are living in England and Wales, who have already adopted a child abroad, where the adoption is not recognised in England and Wales
  • Who are British Citizens living outside of England and Wales considering adoption
  • Who are resident abroad seeking to adopt a child living in England and Wales
  • Where an intercountry adoption has started but a problem has subsequently arisen
